With great enthusiasm, my 7 year old daughter and I read this delightful book. Amelia Chamelia is a young 7 year old who is planning and preparing her big 8th birthday party. She goes shopping for invitations and party supplies, writes a list of friends to invite and is ready to hand out the invitations at school. What could possibly go wrong? Mum has decided that Amelia’s incorrigible cousins Danny and Andy need to be invited. These two seem to cause mischief wherever they go and Amelia is dreading having them visit. Then, when Amelia tries to give the invitations to her friends at school the invitations are accidentally dropped and fly away on a gust of wind. How will Amelia retrieve them and make sure her friends are invited? Will Amelia be able to enjoy her party or will Danny and Andy cause trouble?

The author Laura Sieveking has written a delightful story, perfectly suited to the intended audience of young girls. Coincidentally, my daughter is also planning her 8th birthday and tells me she could relate to the story line. “I would like to go to the shops to buy invitations too” says Miss 7. I asked my daughter what she liked about the book and was told, “I have a friend called Amelia and she has two puppy dogs. We like gymnastics instead of ballet and we play dress ups when Amelia comes over to play”. It is lovely to read a book that my daughter can easily relate to.

The illustrations are enchanting and portray the innocence of the young characters. There is no fancy lipstick or makeup on the girls, the shoes and clothing are just like those I see on my daughter and her friends. The puppy is also drawn beautifully. He looks to be very entertaining and is a lovely character in the book.

I commend both Laura Sieveking (author) and Alyssa Bermudez (illustrator) on this beautiful story. Thank you to Beauty & Lace Book Club and Puffin Books for the opportunity to read and review this book with my daughter. Miss 7 has asked for more Amelia Chamelia books for her birthday and I will be very pleased to purchase these for her.

  1. My 6 year old daughter and I read this book together. It was great! So easy to read – we managed to knock it off over 3 nights. It was entertaining and funny. My daughter was enthralled by the magical powers that Amelia develops, she didn’t like that the cousins tried to ruin the party but thought the ending where they got caught was funny and good. Thanks for a great read! Now to move on to the second book in the series.

  2. Miss Ruby, age 10 loved this book! It came on her Birthday as we were planning her party. She said the book, like her party was a success! She was excited to tell me all about how Amelia can vanish when needed and is super special. Her twin cousins are a pain in the bum but her party still turned out fab. She looks forward to reading the next Amelia Camelia book!

  3. This is one of the first chapter books I read with my 5 year old and she loved it. Every night we would read a chapter and talk about what was happening. Most 5 year olds seem to be very excited by birthday parties. My daughter being one of them. She really enjoyed this story and has asked me to buy more books about Amelia Chamelia.

  4. What a darling little book! My girls love Amelia Chamelia. The book was easy to read for the intended age group and it wasn’t too long that the children became bored with it. Thanks Beauty & Lace. Definitely will buy for other little girls for birthday presents.

  5. The first book in the series, Amelia Chamelia and the Birthday Party, introduces younger readers to Amelia’s world and her secret power that she gets on her eighth birthday. However Mum insists on inviting her incorrigible cousins to the party and mischief arises!

I liked this book and read this with my 8 year old. However whilst she enjoyed reading with me she did find it quite easy. The themes of friendship and family are lovely and the book is engaging. I love the organisation aspects that the reader sees through planning the birthday party and my daughter loved this aspect.

There are a few illustrations in the book as well which would assist the younger readers. The book also has a nice large font and shorter chapters so it does not feel hard to get through in shoet bursts.

Thank you to beauty and lace.

  6. Thank you to Beauty and Lace and Puffin for the copy of Amelia the Chamelia.

I read this book prior to giving it to my friend’s daughters (aged 6-12) and believe all the girls would enjoy reading the book and experiencing Amelia’s adventures. The book was easy to follow and provided descriptions to really capture the imagination of the reader.
I offered the book to my 8 year old step son to read and he declined, and I believe the book is more likely suited to girls of a similar age (trying not to gender stereotype however the 8 year old boy in question had no interest in the storyline).
Looking forward to future stories about Amelia and how she learns to use her powers (hopefully for good!).

  7. I read Amelia Chamelia and the Birthday Party with my seven year old daughter. It was something nice to do with her to try and encourage her to read as it is not her favourite thing. She could really relate to it because she will be having an 8th birthday party next year and is looking forward to giving out invitations. What little girl doesn’t like a little magic and this book provided exactly that. We found it engaging and the illustrations helped keep her interest too. It is a lovely book.
