What a wonderful journey I have just taken back to Bon Temps and it’s surrounding towns. Picking up a Sookie Stackhouse book is like taking a short holiday home to visit old friends, how could they not take up permanent residence in my heart. With every new volume of the series we get a little closer to the characters, we learn more about them and what made them who they are.
In the fifth book of the Sookie Stackhouse series we see Sookie getting dragged further into situations with a lot of the men in her life. For a girl who, up until her romance with Bill Compton, had never really had a relationship she is certianly seeming to test the waters.
No new relationships are embarked upon but there are definite options to be weighed up and experimented with. No real news to report in this area, and I wouldn’t anyway because that would give it away. I think we will need to watch for developments in the forthcoming volumes.
We meet a host of new characters in Dead As A Doornail, all of them a little more than ordinary. Some will stay with us as we continue on the path of Sookie’s life, which I think will ultimately lead to her discovery of where she fits into the supernatural community. It is more than just her ability to read minds, human males may find her overwhelming and scary but supernatural males are another story. There is something about Sookie that attracts supernaturals and I think before we reach the end of the series we will discover what that something is.
As is often the case in Harris’s world, nothing is straightforward. Shifters are being targeted and shot in Bon Temps and suspicion is aimed in Jason’s direction as a new shifter not happy with his new lot in life. By his own admission, if he’d thought about it before his first full moon it would have been a possibility.
But as always Jason takes his new lifestyle in his stride, he finds things to excite him about it and brings his zest for life to play in his new circumstances. So if it’s not Jason, who could be targeting shifters? There is nothing to tie them together to the outside world, so who would know their secrets? There’s a couple of twists even in this storyline, so see if you can work it out before you reach the conclusion.
Sookie on the other hand finds herself in hospital once again and thinks to herself that she should have added being shot to the list of things she didn’t want to go through in the New Year. It seems that Sookie is on the receiving end of almost as much life threatening attention as sexual affections. The devestation around her extends to her house this time round so we have a change of scenery as she moves into a new place while repairs are being undertaken at Gran’s.
A fabulous drive through Bon Temps that, as usual, just didn’t last long enough. Now I need to go rest my fangs and wait, with as much patience as I can muster – which probably won’t be much, for the next excitement filled volume in the life of Sookie Stackhouse.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years, I have broadened my horizons considerably. In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews. Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS!
