Women of a Certain Courage, edited by Bron Bateman, is an inspiring read that leaves you drawing strength from these powerful women’s stories.
Bron Bateman asked eighteen women from widely different backgrounds, races, beliefs, and identities to think of a time when they were asked to be courageous, to tell the story of what courage felt like to them.
It takes courage to share your own story.
Each story is unique in its own way and quite thought-provoking. Many are about despair and hope, but all are about resilience.
This group of women have inspiring stories of how they have not given up. They have shown courage in everyday life, and each of them has made a difference in the world.
The stories cover a diverse range of situations, and a trigger warning is at the front of the book. They cover family, community, stolen generation, domestic violence, medical trauma, gender, activism, and so much more.
Each story is short, and at the end of the book is a brief history of each contributor.
Several stories really resonated with me, and I thought I would mention what I have taken away from reading this book. However, I have decided not to, as to single out those contributors is unfair to the others, as every story is so worthy.
I enjoy reading books that expand my world and my knowledge. This book has achieved that for me as I now have a greater understanding of topics I had not known a lot about.
Thank you to Bron Bateman for her insight into her choice of women to contribute their stories for this project and the range of topics shared by these resilient women.
An excellent read.

I love to read, any book on any topic. I now love ebooks as they are easier to store, I was running out of bookshelves! My other interests are family, gardening and our beautiful King Charles spaniel dog who is my reading companion.

Women of a Certain Courage, a collection of 18 stories from women of various backgrounds and experiences. The idea of courage and what it means individually to the women is thought provoking, emotive and moving. While some of the stories were raw in the telling of what made up courage, it evoked a sense of understanding for what the woman experienced, what brought them to that place, and what it took for them to move beyond those experiences with courage.
Thank you, Beauty and Lace, Bron Bateman for collating the stories, and all the women who contributed to this book and what courage means to them.
Thanks Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read Bron Bateman’s collection of short stories Women of a Certain Courage.
Bron has gathered life stories from a varied group of women, some happy, some sad, some inspiring, but all wonderful in their own way.
A truly inspirational read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a remarkable and inspiring book! Absolutely well done by Bron Bateman and these incredible women sharing their stories. It had me smiling, in tears, uplifted, hopeful. What a rollercoaster of emotions!
So beautifully written and told. Very grateful to have had the opportunity to read this book!
With writings ranging from deeply personal to thoroughly academic, Women of a Certain Courage talks about courage in many forms, all of them moving.
I liked the range of writings that have been collected, each one different and unique. I went through a myriad of emotions reading each of the 18 life stories.
I found the order of writings didn’t match the order of contributors which annoyed me a little. I wanted to know more about the person and had to look through the pages (which I will admit weren’t that many). I would have preferred the author information to follow each piece.
This was an easy book to dip in and out of, and one I’ll be returning to for inspiration, commiseration and understanding.
