Imagine you’re given a choice. In order to continue living, you had to have a special patch containing a mix of products. What would you do? What lengths would you go to if the availability of the patches was controlled by people with evil intent?

This is the question asked in Adam Hamdy’s latest Scott Pearce novel, Red Wolves.

Scott Pearce who is an ex-M16 officer is fighting hard to work out how to stop the world from being overrun by people who depend on these patches to stay alive.  Pearce is working with a team to work out how to achieve this.

His team is made up of Brigette, a former French Intelligence worker, Lelia who was once badly injured and now deals with the daily pain from her injuries, and Kyle who spends a lot of his time wishing he was back at home with his family.

Suddenly thrust into the midst of drug wars and ongoing mass deaths at various locations, the battle is on to work out why all these things are happening. And how they are connected.

This story makes you think about how the innocent can easily become caught up in horrifying plans to cause death, pain, and suffering.

Red Wolves is the second book so far in this series, the first was Black 13. This book works wonderfully as a stand-alone but by reading Black 13 first you will have extra background information on some of the main characters.

I really enjoyed this book and found it very easy to read.  It’s made up of 134 short chapters so it’s one of the books that’s perfect if you are unable to sit for several hours and read without interruption.

A addictive and thought-provoking story.

  1. Thankyou to Beauty and Lace and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read Red Wolves by Adam Hamdy.

This is the second book with ex MI6 officer Scott Pearce and his team.
I haven’t read Black 13, so initially I found it tricky to sort out who was who. But once that was achieved, I was really engaged with Scott and his team as they raced to prevent a terrifying new toxin being released across the world.
There was plenty of action, suspense, betrayal and mistrust.

A great read that keeps you interested and guessing at the outcome.
    4 stars.

  2. “Red Wolves” is the second in the Scott Pearce series, and like the first, it’s a fast moving and timely thriller. I enjoyed it immensely. Few readers would be able to avoid being swept up in the action.

After the successes and failures of “Black 13”, the first novel in the series, Scott Pearce and his team are trying to find a foothold to move forward. Although they addressed the immediate crises generated in “Black 13”, Pearce is still looking for the man or men that he believes are both running a deeper game, and responsible for his sacking from MI6.

Pearce has returned to Thailand, hoping that following the smugglers he was tracking months earlier could still lead him to the unidentified men who were involved in planning terror attacks. Things don’t go smoothly, and Pearce soon finds Blaine Carter, a shadowy American, again offering him a job. This time, though, it seems that their interests coincide. Pearce reluctantly agrees to work for Blaine Carter, in part because of the resources he can offer.

This is a contemporary novel, and as such Hambdy is forced to address the question of the pandemic. He’s chosen to assume that the pandemic restrictions lasted only around four months, and then normal life resumed, albeit with frequent Coronavirus testing. Although that isn’t how it panned out (this novel was written as the pandemic was first hitting), I found this unproblematic. You simply couldn’t tell this story with travel restrictions or lockdown conditions in place; Hambdy has found a good compromise of acknowledging a major event but not letting it impede his story.

This continues to be a series that is a little stronger in the action than in the characters. I felt that the characterisations weren’t terribly strong, and conveyed through a lot of exposition and narrated backstory rather than through showing. This didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story, though it limited my emotional engagement.

The plot is strong. Although it certainly uses many familiar tropes of the thriller genre, there’s also a lot of originality in the detail of the plot. It feels extremely contemporary, and also extremely credible. Despite the conspiracies and backstabbing, it’s easy to believe in this story.

Similarly, the action is strong. The novel is well paced – a rather break neck pace, I must say. But it will keep you engaged and draw you through the novel quite quickly. It doesn’t give you a lot of time for thought; you’ll do most of your reflecting when you’ve finished reading it. This isn’t to hide flaws, though. It’s simply a fast paced and exciting narrative.

So if you’re looking for a thoughtful, character based novel, this certainly isn’t for you. But if you’re in the market for an exciting piece of action, or a believable thriller, or something that’ll make you shiver in fear of a credible threat, “Red Wolves” will provide all of that.

I really enjoyed reading this. It’s intelligent, well constructed, and a wild ride. I don’t think I’ll be the only person awaiting the next installment.

  3. Red Wolves is the second book in the Scott Pearce series. It does read well as a stand-alone however I did find myself keen to read the first book Black 13 to learn about more about the characters and their background.
Adam Hamdy creates an electrifying sense of foreboding throughout the novel. The short, sharp chapters making for a fast paced read.

Drug wars, assassins, a billionaire with his own agenda, a host of diverse characters and a compelling plot pool together to make Red Wolves an entertaining read. I also liked that this is the first book I have read that included the Covid-19 pandemic in the story.

  4. Thank you Beauty and Lace for the offer to review Red Wolves by Adam Hardy.

Red Wolves is the second book in a series. I loved the action and suspense and will be reading the first book as well which is called Block 13.

M16 officer Scott Pearce uncovers a plot to unleash a toxin on the world. Scott and his team go to fight and stop this from happening. The undercover operation goes so wrong that Scott has to stop the threat before it’s too late. This book has everything from a Cairo prison escape, an assassin and a drug war on American streets.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone.

  5. Red Wolves is the second novel written by Adam Hamdy, it is a fast paced action packed thriller which follows the mission of Scott Pearce and his team. The novel starts in a Cairo prison and links to the first novel Black 13, which I haven’t read, however it still works well as a stand alone novel.

Scott and his team are a dynamic mixed bag of people, although I would have enjoyed more character development to build more report and emotional connection to the characters. The story is an enjoyable read broken into small chapters. Drug importation, crooked cops, biological weapons, all after the world is recovering from the Covid 19 virus. This is a interesting modern spy novel which will appeal to many readers

  6. Scott Pearce and his team are on the hunt to stop an act of terrorism that can spread widely, killing thousands. This is the scene set in Red Wolves by Adam Hamdy, a fast paced thriller set in current day where a poison has been created and threatens to kill thousands across the globe. Pearce, together with Leila, Brigitte Attali and Kyle Wollerton, is hired by Blaine Carter to neutralise the threat following a jail break and the creation of a patch that can kill within seconds…or lead to a lifetime of dependency on replacing the said patch every few days. There is a great deal of action leading to the ultimate success of the mission though the story is definitely not complete with the epilogue suggesting further novels in the series.
I wasn’t aware this was the second book in this series so this can easily be read as a standalone novel. I will seek out the first and any subsequent in the series.
My only criticism of the novel was the repeated mention of having COVID tests when entering venues. While a major part of the world today, this threw me off questioning what it meant to the story and also how readers will interpret this in years to come.

Thank you to Beauty and Lace and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read this book.

  7. This is a follow on book to Black 13, which I have not read. At first I had difficulty following the story and sorting out the characters. Then I was hooked into this suspenseful thriller.
Scott Pearce, ex M16 is the main protagonist. He is chasing down a deadly toxin, which is about to be released in America. There are a number of competing interests. He is unsure who he can trust.
This is a fast paced, modern international thriller that is well worth reading

  8. Thank-you Beauty & Lace for giving me the chance to read & review ‘Red Wolves’ by Adam Hamdy.
A great thrilling read with some very fast action scenes where I could not always anticipate the outcome. Scott Pearce and his globetrotting team work together trying to prevent a deadly toxin being released, although it seems that not everyone can be trusted. This was very fast paced but a good read, some of the described scenes where a bit gruesome – sometimes I just wanted to close my eyes at the ideas portrayed. However, I enjoyed the final outcome. I look forward to further books on Scott Pearce and his adventures as there is plenty of scope for more.
Thank-you Beauty & Lace Book Club for the opportunity to read ‘Red Wolves’ by Adam Hamdy.

  9. Red Wolves is the second in the Scott Pearce thriller series. It is set in multiple locations around the world and in today’s covid-19 climate.
Carrying on from Black 13, Scott Pearce is still on the hunt for those responsible for his sacking from MI6 while also going through the current crisis and where that takes him as he does lands him in front of Blaine Carter whose wishes for help on tracking down some criminals he thinks are responsible for his father’s death. This job helps Scott considerably with resources and man power so against his better judgement he accepts the job from Blaine.

As an action thriller novel sent in a covid pandemic world we see this used throughout the novel to show how the world is coping with the virus and how testing is being done. This is not exactly how it is her is Australia or anywhere in the world for that matter but I liked the perspective that life was a bit more normal in this way and provided a great vibe for the book. Knowing it was written during the early stages of the pandemic certainly give credit the the author for including it in the novel.

The plot is great. The back story is used regularly and the information on character relationships, histories and characteristics are used well to create reader relationships with the story.

I read the novel very quickly and found i spent some time wishing there was more. Feeling that it could have ended slightly different but I enjoyed it and will read more in the series should there be more written.

It is quirky, witty, smart and fast paces. Everything I love in an action thriller novel.

Thank you Beauty and Lace for allowing me to read this novel.
