Up In Smoke returns us to the world of the dragons, picking up 6 weeks after we left off in Playing with Fire. A fast paced story with lots of twists and new scrapes that our favourite leads find themselves caught up in. Never a dull moment with these dragons, demons and other supernatural creatures around.
The opening scenes have May still held hostage in Abaddon by Magoth as he tries to convince her to become his consort. The whole time she has been heartsick and pining for her wyvern mate Gabriel, still in the mortal world trying to find ways to return her to his side. There is quite a bit of summoning going on in the early pages with May being wrenched from dimension to dimension before she has the chance to catch a breath. All before a suitable arrangement is finally reached that sees May return to Gabriel’s arms.
The relationship between Gabriel and May reaches many new levels in this installment of the Silver Dragons, and it shows us how easy it is to change as we fall in love, to get swept up in the characteristics of our partners and surrender a part of ourselves to become more like them. This surrender is not always welcomed, it can feel like losing yourself and your own identity. May finds herself in this predicament and we see her try to work through the issues with Gabriel and see if she can retain those parts of herself she can feel being surrendered. We see how with the love and support of your partner you really can overcome all obstacles.
The dragons have managed to ensure May’s release from Abaddon but that is far from the end of our acquaintance with Abaddon in this novel.
If you haven’t entered the world MacAlister has created for her dragons you will still find a lot to enjoy in this story, and you won’t be lost having not read the first installment. It will leave you wanting to go back track and catch up afterwards though. There are so many elements to this story that will draw you in and captivate you, an image based imagination will certainly take you far. All of the dragons are described in great detail as extremely sexy and driven to mate.
My appetite has certainly been whet and I am left eagerly anticipating the adventures awaiting me in the third novel of the Silver Dragons.
