Tease Me, Cowboy takes Rachael Johns far away from outback Western Australia and Bunyip Bay, the setting for her current series, and lands her deep in the heart of rodeo country.
Johns was approached to be part of the Montana Born stable and write one of the stories in the Copper Mountain Rodeo series set in Marietta, MT. I have not read any of the other Copper Mountain Rodeo stories but I think the whole idea of writing in a fictional setting created by someone else is kinda intriguing. (I just snuck over to Montana Born Books and read about how this story came to be.)
In Tease Me, Cowboy Johns got to play with her favourite romance trope, first love reunited, and I think she did it beautifully.
Selah Davis grew up in Marietta the younger daughter of the town minister, after high school she moved to Seattle to pursue a career in journalism. She comes back to cover the rodeo for the magazine she writes for and while catching up with her girlfriends confesses that her biggest regret is one shared by people all over the world I’m sure, though possibly in reverse.
How many of us look back and have second thoughts about our virginity. People often regret who and or how they lost it, Selah regrets refusing to give it up to her high school boyfriend Levi Monroe – who just happens to enter the bar moments before her confession. The girls think the weekend would be the perfect opportunity to turn back time and finish their unfinished business.
Tease Me, Cowboy is written from both Selah and Levi’s perspective so we get inside their heads to fill in the back story and discover what went wrong the first time round. It also gives a little insight into where they are at right now with all their preconceptions and baggage. I must admit, it was a little amusing at times and you had to wonder if they were going to manage to get it together.
The Montana Born tales are all novellas so they are short and sweet without hundreds of pages to draw out stories and slowly flesh out characters. Once upon a time I found this to be a little off-putting, you just get invested and the story is over but as I’ve gotten older and have more demands on my time a tight self-contained novella can be extremely satisfying. Also, being part of the Montana Born stable, if this isn’t enough Marietta for you there are plenty of others in the series for you to check out.
Selah is a dedicated career woman, too focused on work to worry about settling down. There have been men in her life but nobody she really connected with. She’s not quite sure how she’s going to approach seducing Levi as seduction really isn’t her style.
Levi is a cowboy competing in his last Copper Mountain Rodeo, as much fun as the rodeo circuit is he’s decided it’s time to build a life for himself while he’s still in his prime.
Johns has given us just enough information to be able to really see Selah and Levi with well rounded secondary characters to back them up. I would be interested to read more of the Montana Born books to see what happens to the characters whose lives I got to peek in on.
Tease Me, Cowboy was a light and enjoyable change of scenery for Johns who tackles the other side of the world convincingly. I will be interested to see if she has more Marietta tales floating around in that talented little head of hers.

I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years, I have broadened my horizons considerably. In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews. Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS!
