Alone by Gillian Wells is a story full of suspense, crime and romance.

Rachel lives alone on her property in central Queensland. Sam, her husband has died. She loves the land and her way of life, but it is a challenge managing a cattle station on her own.

Rachel has been considering her options but a brief visit in the dead of night by her estranged son throws her plans into turmoil.

At age ten, her son Johnny suffered an accident. A head injury caused his behaviour to change overnight. At age fourteen he attempted to kill his father, Sam. Johnny then leaves home and has had no contact with his parents for six years, when he returned demanding money.

Finally, the news has reached him of his father’s death and he has returned, threatening Rachel,  demanding his share of the inheritance.

Rachel knows he will never be satisfied with the amount left to him in the will.

The morning after Johnny’s nighttime visit, she comes across the body of a stranger on her property. Rachel wonders if the two events are connected.

Mike, a police officer who arrives to investigate the body in the paddock, befriends Rachel. He rings her every day to check she is ok. As their friendship develops, Rachel knows there is something he isn’t telling her.

Pat, an artist, turns up and asks to camp on her property to paint the landscape. Rachel agrees as she feels safer with somebody there. But Pat is definitely hiding something.

These events have unsettled Rachel and she realises how vulnerable she is living alone. The threatening visits by her son are now more frequent and he is accompanied by members of his motorcycle gang.

As the threats escalate to actions Rachel has tough decisions to make.

This is a story you can’t put down. It is action-packed with twists and suspense. You so want Rachel to be safe and find a solution to all her problems.

A great read.

  1. Oh my goodness. This book sucked me in, and kept me awake all night. I could not put it down!!
Set in our very own rural Queensland, on a cattle property the story covers love and loss, and the grief which comes with that.
Life unravels even more for Rachel, when her wayward son returns home, and he is not someone to mess with. Being so alone on her beloved property, Rachel is feeling unsafe and vulnerable. Would her son and his gang harm her to get the money he is desperate for?
The twists and turns will keep you enthralled, and turning page after page, as the story takes shape.
Beautifully descriptive, we see Rachel grow into a strong, confident and independant woman, with a bit of romance as well.
A fabulous read, which I highly recommend.
Thank you Beauty & Lace for the opportunity to read, and to Gillian Wells for such a great story. I look forward to reading more from you.

  2. Alone by Gillian Wells is a great read. I picked it up and kept turning the pages far too late into the night, because it’s so readable. Loved the character of Rachel, and there are plenty of adventures and twists and turns to keep you interested the whole way through. My first book by this author, but I’ll definitely read more. Thanks to Beauty and Lace for a copy of this book in exchange for a voluntary, honest review.

I love reading books set in Australia by Australian authors. Definitely worth reading to those thinking about it.
Rachel is a strong character who endures so much during her life. there are challanges when trying to survive on a cattle station on her own & through the support of friends & neighbours she pulls through.

Found the book interesting & enjoyable from start to finish.
    thank you

  4. I loved Alone! It was such a good read about the trials and tribulations of Rachel who is trying to run her farm alone after her husband dies. She is such a good person but her son causes her grief. Does she rise above it all?

  5. This was a really captivating read about Rachel, a widow who is running her cattle station alone in Outback Queensland. When her estranged son and a dead body turn up on her property around the same time she begins to question how safe she is “alone” on the farm. This book really drew me in as I got pulled into Rachel’s life. She really has a lot to contend with and it really made me think how remote and vulnerable you can be sometimes.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this great read.

  6. Thank you Beauty and Lace and Gillian Wells for the chance to read ‘Alone.’
I enjoyed the book and found it easy to read.
It is about Rachel -a widow who lives on a farm alone, her son (who is not a nice person) and a policeman who is new to town. Rachel’s son continues to threaten her and a romance grows between her and the policeman- Mike.
Thrown in lots of drama and a not super predictable story line to create a great read.
