Escape Publishing have brought together eight talented Aussie authors for a collaborative series of short stories set in the small Queensland town of Milpinyani Springs.
Lucky is the character that I found the most intriguing, she is the respected town publican of the Royal Hotel with a back story only hinted at. Lucky is late 20s and running the local pub, so to begin with she was younger than I expected and quite a petite woman with a colourful vocabulary. I loved her.
Dare Cornish is the new town police officer and Lucky’s story is told in the third person but I felt that it was more skewed to his perspective. I also found this one to be the story that blurred the timeline the most. It begins two weeks before rodeo weekend, but the action happens just after the rodeo which was the weekend Casey was back in town.
The stories all stand alone and would lose nothing read individually but they do complement one another, especially when you’re talking about Lucky; being the town publican means she pops up in more of the stories than not.
Lucky has been hurt in the past and having worked hard to build the respect of the town she doesn’t do anything that could jeopardise that, which means no hook ups in her home town – ever. Lucky is a young woman who has learned to switch off her desires in her home town, until Dare rides into town.
Dare awakens the desires she’s been so good at keeping a lid on. This story is fraught with longing and heat which culminates in more than just a quick hook up destined to undo the many years of hard work building the respect of the town.
Lucky’s story is steamy but still quite sweet, the heat is definitely there but it’s not overpowering. A nice snack sized story of finding a connection that’s more than just chemistry when you least expect it.
The thing that didn’t really feel right in this story is that Lucky uses colourful language, she swears a lot but when it comes to the steamy scenes the word ‘effing’ is used; effing heaven, effing bliss and it just didn’t quite seem to fit with the amount of swearing up until that point.

My blurb went missing… so now I have to bring you a new one. One that is a little broader too.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years I have broadened my horizons considerably.
I inhale music, hair metal that satisfies my inner bogan is where my musical passion lies, but again I’ve been exposed to lots of different music I wouldn’t normally listen to and have broadened those horizons also.
In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews.
Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS! Reading, writing, speaking, listening – if it’s got words I’m there!
