Abigail Johnson writes Young Adult novels of heartbreaking dilemma and much soul searching. Even If I Fall promises a journey of healing and self-discovery that sounds very much like falling for the wrong boy turning out absolutely right. Just the synopsis tells me this one could be a real tear jerker.

A year ago, Brooke Covington lost everything when her beloved older brother, Jason, confessed to the murder of his best friend, Calvin. Brooke and her family became social pariahs, broken and unable to console one another. Brooke’s only solace remains the ice-skating rink, where she works but no longer lets herself dream about a future skating professionally.

When Brooke encounters Calvin’s younger brother, Heath, on the side of the road and offers him a ride, everything changes. She needs someone to talk to…and so does Heath. No one else understands what it’s like. Her brother, alive but gone; his brother, dead but everywhere.

Soon, they’re meeting in secret, despite knowing that both families would be horrified if they found out. In the place of his anger and her guilt, something frighteningly tender begins to develop, drawing them ever closer together.

But when a new secret comes out about the murder, Brooke has to choose whose pain she’s willing to live with – her family’s or Heath’s. Because she can’t heal one without hurting the other.

Even If I Fall promises to be a heartfelt and compelling read of love, family and redemption.

  1. Even if I fall was a great read. Once I started, I just couldn’t put it down. It shows how in a split decision your world can be changed forever but not only does it affect those directly involved it also affects the families on both sides especially in a small town where everyone knows everyone and gossip is rife. It also shows how each person can deal with grief differently. Brooke and Health find a friendship in what most would say the strangest of circumstances and Brooke is persistent in knowing the truth no matter how much it hurts so they can all try and heal and come to terms with what really happened. With some ups and downs and lots of tears life does not stop for those who are left to pick up the pieces.

Thank you so much Beauty and Lace and Harlequin Young Adult for the honour of reading and reviewing this great book.

  2. Firstly, thank you Beauty and Lace and HQ Young Adult for inviting me to read this novel, Even If I Fall.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down after the first few chapters. It is tale of strength, family drama, friendship and love. Brooke is a persistent young women who is going through a family tragedy and goes to lengths to find out the truth. As it is narrated from Brooke’s perspective, we follow her in her quest to help find justice while also testing relationships with the loved around her. She meets Heath who is on the other side of this very sad tragedy and together they form a special secret bond and try to come to terms with what has happened and put the pieces together. She also learns that it is okay to follow your dreams in spite of everything that has happened.

A wonderful light read and I highly recommend it.

  3. Even If I Fall by Abigail Johnson was an easy read that I ended up enjoying. I wasn’t sure when I first started as it had some American terminology that I wasn’t familiar with but I gradually got the feel for the book and for the main character Brooke and it became a really easy read.
The book explores Brooke’s past to her current life as to why her and her family are virtually exiled in their home town to the point that Brooke and her sister are even home schooled to ensure they are kept away. The true story is eventually uncovered and it was sad but believable to read how virtually an entire town can turn on you.
When Brooke and Heath meet for the first you can feel the awkwardness and tension which wants to make you keep reading to see how on earth things could change.
I enjoyed the way the book was written but occasionally felt it went into the emotional side of things a tad too much for my liking (hope that doesn’t make me too heartless!). Other than that it was a just a really easy read that I finished very quickly.
Thank you Beauty & Lace and Young Adult HQ for the opportunity to read and review this book. I’m keen to source more of Abigail’s books now!

  4. This is the first book I have read by Abigail Johnson and I was so impressed!
The story is about Brooke Covington and her family as they deal with the fallout of Brooke’s brother Jason being convicted for the murder of his best friend Calvin. As the story progresses Brooke finally finds someone that she can talk to freely and openly about the tragedy – literally the last person she would expect – Calvin’s younger brother Heath.

All of the main characters are given a wonderful depth and realism which helped to make the novel so engrossing. Brookes humble attitude to her own life and the dedication she feels to her family makes her so endearing to the reader and you just can’t help but route for her. As for Heath, he is written with the most perfect balance of anger and sadness at what has happened to his family and the most amazing ability of recognising that none of what has happened is Brooke’s fault and being able to see past this.

Of course there is a romance that forms between Heath and Brooke and I absolutely loved that element of the story. I am a huge sucker for a romance and I thought this one was beautiful and not just convenient or unbelievable – but a true connection formed from understanding each other in a way no one else can.

This book is classified as young adult genre, but it is also a romance and I really would say that anyone can read this book and enjoy it. The themes are by no means too young for an older reader – family, loss, love and pain are relatable to any reader themes, young or old.

Thanks again to Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read this book!
