I have been salivating at the thought of being able to sink my fangs into this series for such a long time. When I heard there was a possibility I might get to review them I could hardly contain myself. So when I got this one I wanted to clear my schedule and start immediately.
I also know a lot of huge fans of the True Blood series that are interested in the books but hesitant to take that step and immerse themselves, just in case the books ruin the series for them. I must say I have a little bit of that going on but the excitement far outweighs it.
So on that note, I am now going to go off and read it. I just wanted to get you in my headspace before I started.
For those of you who are True Blood fans and have watched the series, this is an easy read covering the beginning of the first season. I find myself picturing the show as I read along. I don’t think this has detracted from my enjoyment of the book or my love of the TV series. It has taken away some of the work of my imagination though, as I don’t need to create images of the characters, I already have them.
Dead Until Dark is a thoroughly engaging read for all fans of the vampire genre, whether you are familiar with the characters or not. Encompassing more than just vampires, we also meet shape shifters and our heroine reads minds. Set in sleepy Bon Temps, Louisiana much of the book centres around the local bar where Sookie Stackhouse works. We meet all the locals and get an insight into the way they think from Sookie’s glimpses into their thoughts.
The Sookie Stackhouse series is set in a modern society where vampires have come out of the closet so to speak and are integrating their lives with the common mortals. An artificial blood drink has been created to alleviate death by vampire and allow mortals to get over their fears of the vampires that go bump in the night. In the society we become acquainted with the vampires are treated like a lot of minority groups in any society; with overall fear and disdain, mixed relationships are frowned upon and though people are fascinated with vampires they are also still viewed with a little fear.
This is a great introduction to the residents of Bon Temps and surrounding areas for True Blood virgins and a refreshing reacquaintance for those who love the television series. There are some small differences between the storyline here and what I remember of the first episodes of the series but nothing drastic enough to impact adversely on either experience. I would recommend it to anyone who loves vampires and the idea of them living in society among mortals.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years, I have broadened my horizons considerably. In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews. Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS!
I really want to read this, it sounds great!
