Doom Creek by Alan Carter is a brilliant, easy to read crime novel. It’s the second book in the Nick Chester series, but it stands alone as anything you need to know about the first book is explained.
The action and the mystery start from the first chapter!
It’s set in the Marlborough Sound on the South Island of New Zealand and the description of the landscape is breathtaking.
Sergeant Nick Chester is looking forward to a quiet life on his farm in the small town of Havelock. However, that doesn’t seem to be happening.
- A miner is dredging the River for gold just below his house and acting suspiciously.
- A trigger happy American Cult has purchased the property next door.
- A film crew is filming a movie about past murders in the area just up the road from his house.
- A body turns up in the cold room of the local Four Square Store.
- An earthquake causes a land slide which unearths half a body at the site of the film set.
Plus, Nick has no recollection of where he was or what he was doing on Monday night. And, he needs to keep his wife Vanessa and son Paulie safe too.
All this action is just in the first couple of chapters. There is plenty more action still to come!
What did Nick do during those missing hours and why can’t he remember? Will he be a suspect?
Will all these events be connected? Who is responsible?
Nick and his partner Latifa, with the help from the extra police presence sent to help them, work tirelessly to solve these crimes. You are left guessing the outcome to the very end of the book.
A great read 5 stars.
I will certainly be reading Book 1 “The Marlborough Man.” Plus any future Nick Chester adventures!

I love to read, any book on any topic. I now love ebooks as they are easier to store, I was running out of bookshelves! My other interests are family, gardening and our beautiful King Charles spaniel dog who is my reading companion.
This was my first Alan Carter novel. Wow – I couldn’t put it down!
the story was so intricately weaved I didn’t even see it coming.
Great as a stand alone book but now I want to read the first.
Thanks Fremantle press and beauty and lace for the opportunity to read this amazing book
This is the second book I have read by Alan Carter he is certainly a great author
This novel is set in the south island of New Zealand,
Gold fever is a major problem between the locals and prospectors and now a brash american and his followers have moved into a once abandoned lodge they are a gun happy bunch causing problems
Sergeant Nick Chester and his family moved into this area for a quieter life, his co worker Constable Latifa Rapata is such a great character
A body is found in a cool room then an earthquake hits uncovering a decomposed body,
No more spoilers from me a great book from start to finish
If you haven’t read the first book you will still be able to follow Doom Creek
This is not the genre I would usually read but I really enjoyed this book. Alan Carter is a great writer. The story is told by Sergeant Nick Chandler, a country cop in NZ. It is told in a coversational style and just flows with humour and quirky twists and turns. Apparently it is one of a series but stands alone. I will be looking to read the first book.
Thank you Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read Doom Creek by Alan Carter.

Sergeant Nick Chester is the main character who is determined to get to the truth even if it may cost him everything.
This is a must read!! I’ll be looking up more of Alan Carter’s books!!
Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the first book I have read by the author Alan Carter and it is also a genre that I would not usually read but was keen to try something new.
The setting is on the South Island in New Zealand. The story is told by Sergeant Nick Chester who is a country police officer. Sergeant Chester has moved here for a quieter life but he is in for quite a surprise if that is what he really thinks is going to happen. The story is full of mystery, murders, highs, lows, twists and turns it keeps you turning the pages. With the truth needing to be solved Sergeant Chester Is determined to find it even if it costs him everything!
I have previously enjoyed Alan Carter’s writing in his Cat Kwong series and Doom creek, the second book in the Nick Chester series, didn’t let me down.
I was pulled into the story from the first few pages. The action never stops in this gritty crime novel and just when you think Carter has thrown everything at his main character he throws in another murder and a couple of personal tragedies for Nick to cope with.
Doom Creek is a must read for crime fans. Real characters, dark humour and the beautiful scenery of Havelock in the Marlborough district of New Zealand make this an entertaining read.
