Consequences by Gillian Wells is a story about family, love, heartache, loss, abuse and determination to overcome the challenges life throws at you.

Consequences is the second book in the series. We follow Rachel and Mike from the first book “Alone.” The first chapter fills you in on everything you need to know about Rachel and Mike’s history.

Rachel and Mike have been married for 5 years. Mike has been left an inheritance which he invested into Rachel’s property, which makes it now their joint Braham Cattle Stud. They have restored the old homestead into a plush holiday let and their business is a success.

Rachel has a wonderful relationship with Mike’s two children Emma and Ben. The two children spend school holidays with them, learning and loving all things related to the farm.

Finally, life is perfect for Rachel. She has a husband and stepchildren who love her, and a successful business.

Of course, Rachel and Mike are busy people with all the normal problems of running their own property.

When Rachel meets Mike’s ex-wife, Clarrie, she liked her straight away. But, she instinctively didn’t like Keith, Clarrie’s new husband.

Step children and teenage years can be challenging. However, Rachel senses there is something quite serious happening to make Emma behave the way she is. What can she do about it, as after all, she is just the step mum?

Mike has his own problems with his own family. They have been most welcoming to Rachel, but now they are dragging them into their issues. Unwell and aging parents, plus three brothers and families all living and working on his parent’s property. Things are not running smoothly. All are having a say in the running of the business.

Twists and turns from Rachel’s own past arise, with a surprise that shocks her. She has some tough decisions to make as this could change the future for both her and Mike.

Together Rachel and Mike work through these and more challenges they have been dealt.
All Rachel really wanted was a quiet life!

There are many twists and turns and surprises. What are the consequences for Rachel’s future if she fights back?

Gillian Wells takes some sensitive issues and deals with them in a realistic and sensitive manner.
It is a great read, one you can’t put down.

  1. Consequences is the sequel to Alone by Gillian Wells, and continues the story of Rachel, a widow who had been living alone on her family Braham cattle farm following the untimely death of her husband from cancer.

It is now five years later and Rachel has remarried. Mike was the local policeman who had come to her rescue when her estranged drug addicted son had turned her world upside down.

Rachel and Mike have happily rebuilt their lives together, and Rachel is now firmly part of Mike’s family – stepmother to Mike’s two children, Emma and Ben and accepted and loved by Mike’s aging parents Catherine and Henry.

All had been going well, but when sickness, cattle duffing and other family dramas occur, tensions start to emerge …

Another page-turner, Consequences is an entertaining read and covers a number of sensitive topics with dignity.

  2. Consequences by Gillian Wells was a lovely surprise. I didn’t realise it was a follow up to ‘Alone’ and so it was really good to be reunited with the characters. There were many things going on at once with different problems and although I felt like some of them were not delved into as much as I would have liked, I did like that the problems were different to those that you usually read about. Thank you Beauty and Lace for letting me read this book >:o)

  3. I was pleased to read Consequences by Gillian Wells. It was great to be with Rachel and Mike again 5 years after Alone.
I loved all the characters apart from Keith and Wendy. Other readers will know why.
Thank you for allowing me to read this great book.

  4. Consequences is the second book by Gillian Wells that I have read Alone was the first book,
Love the characters Rachel and Mike they are such a beautiful couple
Lots of problems seem to happen at once for this couple but they manage to sort everything out,
A couple of characters were really horrible but another great read from this author
Really hope there is another book in this series
    Thanks Beauty and Lace

  5. After reading Alone by Gillian Wells, I was curious to read the sequel, Consequences. It was great to catch up with the familiar characters, and what they were up to, but you could also read it as a standalone novel, as this book is set five years later, so has its own story. Another heartwarming read, thanks to Beauty and Lace and Shawline Publishing Group for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

  6. Consequences is a lovely follow on to Alone by Gillian Wells. I really like the two main characters, Rachel and Mike and this follow on story was so full of happenings I just wanted to read it non stop. The story is so very realistic and the family issues so heart wrenching that I only fell out of favour with two other characters.
So much is happening on the farm in family relationships and children that I felt a huge part of it.
Will there be a follow up story? I do hope so as I need to know how their life continues.
    A truly lovely read!

A truly lovely and inspiring story.

  8. I loved this sequel to the first book, Alone. Even though a continuing story, they can be read individually.
This book jumps ahead a few years, and Rachel and Mike have melded into wedded bliss.
His children are now much older, and come with their own set of trials, which has step mum Rachel, and dad Mike, needing to step in, and not only pick up the pieces, but navigate everyone through a very difficult situation.
Add to that a shock from the past, and Rachel and Mike have many new directions in which to navigate their wedded bliss.
Gillian Wells has written beautifully, the challenges faced by so many broken up families, as well as those who suffer the heartbreak of drugs infiltrating the lives of the innocent.
I am so glad there was a sequel, and I actually hope there is another, so we can follow on as Rachel and Mike and there brand new family dynamic.
Thank you Beauty & Lace , Shawline Publishing Group, and Gillian Wells, for a truly engaging story.

  9. Consequences by Australian author Gillian Wells is the second book in the Alone series.

Rachel and Mike have been married for 5 years running their Braham Cattle property in the remote Australian outback. Life could not be more blissful for Rachel after suffering such great loss and heartache in the past. She gets along well with her stepchildren Emma and Ben and Mike’s ex-wife Clarrie. At last Rachel is fulfilled and content.

Little did she know her life would take a turn she didn’t expect. Rachel had been through so many ups and downs with the loss of her husband and return of her estranged son, she thought she had them all figured out but the past always comes back to haunt you.

Rachel must decide what is most important to help her move forward and what consequences she must take and endure to steer the direction of her life to happiness once again.

Gillian’s writing style is very descriptive, full of heartache, secrets and special moments that keep you engrossed with the story and characters. You get a great sense of the Australian outback in this story, and you can almost feel like you are right there with the characters.

The story is a nice straightforward read which flows well with a plot that keeps you reading until the very end. It is a very relatable story about characters and events that may happen in real life.

I would recommend this book and series to anyone that loves rural family drama.

Thank you, Beauty and Lace and Shawline Publishing for the opportunity to read and review.

  10. I was very happy to be given the opportunity to read this sequel to Alone. Although it is a stand alone book in it’s own right, it is nice to know the back story for Rachel and Mike.
It is another great story and I do enjoy the author’ style of writing. I think I preferred the first book, but would still definitely read another book in the series if there is another one!
    Another great easy holiday read!
