Author: Elizabeth Dunk
Escape Publishing have brought together eight talented Aussie authors for a collaborative series of short stories set in the small Queensland town of Milpinyani Springs.
Maree is the single schoolteacher in the tiny town of Milpinyani Springs. She is approaching fifty and has two grown children; we don’t know anything about her husband but she did move to Milpinyani Springs on her own.
This story is very much the raunchy schoolteacher fantasy, it was fun but it wasn’t frivolous. Elizabeth Dunk has taken a slightly older woman, with all her insecurities, and had her get the younger man.
To an extent with this one I needed to remind myself that this is a series of secret confessions, raunchy fantasies and realism doesn’t necessarily need to play a part. I have no issues with the older woman and younger man, or with the schoolteacher and the groundsman; my issues were with the fantasies played out in the school. The thought of them getting busy in the library on the cushions where the children sit and in the classroom just sat a little outside the realm of what I could conceive of actually happening.
Dunk has these two christening all conceivable places on school grounds but they too end up stopping on the side of a road somewhere between town and his place. She also adds a younger, attractive tourist in town for the rodeo to the mix.
What begins as a bit of a schoolteacher fantasy deepens into the beginnings of a relationship, it becomes more than just a physical relationship with the sharing of their backgrounds over dinner. This is another pairing that it would be interesting to see a little further into the future.
Perhaps Escape could run a Secret Confessions reunion special, with a second story about each of the couples at the next rodeo because all the stories take place around that time.
