Tim Dean will certainly get you thinking with the book “How We Became Human”.

His common sense and calm approach to the way we humans behave is wonderful to read.

I found that I would read a section of the book, then have to read it aloud to a friend, and we would discuss our thoughts.  I feel like I have already read the book three times over.

The book covers such things as religion, different political views, social media dramas, and outrage addiction, gender equality, racial issues, and more.

Tim gives suggestions on how we can better cope with some of today’s issues.

This really is a brilliant read and so very worth your time.  Like me, I am sure it will get you thinking and wanting to share with others.

  1. Thank you Beauty and Lace and Tim Dean for the opportunity to read this book.

Each chapter was thoughtfully written and researched. The text was easy to read and each chapter was broken into smaller bite-sized pieces to really consider each idea.

I would recommend this book to others and even give to an older child to read.

  2. Thank You Beauty and Lace, Tim Dean and Pan MacMillan for the chance to read How we Become Human, it is a fantastic book.

I enjoyed every page. I could not put it down! I did not want to sleep until I had finished reading How We Became Human. It is well researched, eloquently written with considered of the genre and its readers.

Tim Dean empowers us, as readers, to interpret his writing, ponder the complexities of our existence over time and consider the implications of our evolutions. I feel like Tim writes perfectly for the world that we live it, the realities that we face and the ever-changing views that present as cultrually normal.

As a primary teacher I feel like this is so important to consider the evolution of right and wrong and how this fits in with social justice, laws and vales around the world today.

Thank you again, so much!!!! I really enjoyed delving into the what ifs and the whys of this novel and feel like there is so much more to be researched and said around this topic.

Tim Dean you have written a very insightful book!

  3. Thank you for this book reading opportunity. The book is a philosophical book which makes you learn, think and understand. I also liked the aspect that you can open the book at any page and start reading.

It made me think about life and what we are doing, especially with our current situation, these things are even more essential.

The author’s style is clear and gets to the point and expresses the concerns for what is happening in our world today.

This is a good book to understand and accept and question all at the same time, it is worth reading and reading again. It would also be excellent in a group discussion format.

  4. I must admit, I wanted to read this book as a change from what I would normally read and to challenge myself a bit. As a reader who reads to escape, from life, from the everyday, this book did not do that.

I struggled with it. The first part I could only read a few pages at a time, as I could not immerse myself into it. But I persevered.
It did get interesting, the writer engaged with me, he led me little bit by little bit to explore alternative possibilities. But I will also admit, I have not finished it. Im about ¾ of the way thru and I will, I will get there. I may even reread it a second time to follow up and get a different and clearer insight.

But it was not for me. Not at this time.

And I agree, it would be a good book to dissect as a group discussion.

  5. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this very interesting book. It certainly made me ponder topics that honestly, I haven’t had time to really consider in my fast paced life (parenting, working and, Uni, oh my!). The writing style had me engaged pretty quickly too.
I’m passing this on to my 12 year old (who thinks she is 22) as she would benefit from a lot of the topics.

  6. Thanks again Beauty and lace for the opportunity to read How we Became Human by Tim Dean.

How we became human was a brilliantly written book that definetely had me stop a few times and have a good hard think on the way I have been interpreting and doing things in my life so far.

Its definetely not a book to read if you are tired as I discovered though, you really need to have the ability to sit and really take in what you’re reading, which if Im honest I did struggle with in some parts.
However, I honestly believe that is more of a “me” problem rather than an author problem, as his writing was easy to follow, written clear and appeared to be very well researched.
I have passed this book onto my father in law who I know will love it and devour it and appreciate it the ability that I didnt have.

Perfect book for philosophy readers, or even physics readers like Stephen Hawking. Great Christmas present for your smart brother in law!

  7. A well written, well researched book. It covers many modern day concerns and embeds stories that are known ans/or easy to connect to.
Personally I found it hard to stick with initially and often found myself having to reread sections to really help me understand what they were saying.
I would recommend to a well educated person who is interested in the topics discussed.
I will definitely reread the book again.

  8. Thank you Beauty & Lace and Pan Macmillan for the chance to read How We Became Human by Tim Dean.

I was excited to read this book as it’s outside my usual genre and I wanted to challenge myself. This book did not disappoint! It is not an escape from real life – my usual preference – but a ‘thinking’ book. It takes your mind and makes you consider things that you may not have normally thought about and adds angles that you may not have considered before.
I really enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone with this book.

Thank you to @beautyandlacemag and @macmillanaus for the opportunity to read this insightful book. I was drawn to read this by the precis on the back cover. I personally am intrigued with philosophy and human cultures and traditions.

This book didn’t let me down.

It’s exploration of modern morality and how to improve our ways of living was eye opening, to say the least. This book stirs life evaluation in one’s mind, which, I think is beneficial to do from time to time.

I look forward to exploring more literature from Dr Tim Dean, I might even read his thesis.
