Liz Byrski, author of At the End of the Day took some time out to have a chat with Beauty and Lace.
Get to know Liz in this interview.
Tell us about At the End of the Day…
At the End of the Day is about the challenges and the opportunities that age offers us to re-consider the past and re-shape the future. It’s about confronting our ideas about who we are and finding the courage to change in later life.
Who is your target audience?
I started writing about age for women aged 50 plus, but my readers now range from women in their 40s to their nineties and a surprising number of men from the same age group.
Do you have a favourite place to write?
Yes, I always write in my study which has a view of the garden and is packed with books and photographs. Most of the time it is also occupied by my dog in the armchair alongside my desk.
What is the most valuable piece of advice you have been given about writing?
Only ask for advice from people who know what they’re talking about. For most of us, this excludes partners, parents, adult children, and best friends. Hang in there, it’s hard and tedious but very rewarding.
If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?
Helen Garner
What is your favorite and least favorite part of publishing?
My favorite part is getting to know the characters by writing them, as they are only shadows when I begin. Editing is my least favorite part, especially now as I am getting older and don’t spot mistakes and repetitions so easily. The agony of editing is my least favorite.
What are you currently reading?
Tenderness by Alison Macleod
Who are your favourite authors?
Helen Garner, Alison Macleod, A.L. Kennedy, Jonathon Coe, Liane Moriarty, John Lanchester
Where can our readers follow you?
On Facebook or my website.
What is next for Liz Byrski?
Another book I hope, but before that a few days holiday in Busselton on the gorgeous South West Coast of Western Australia.

I am a mother of four beautiful children. I can’t leave a book unfinished which equals a lot of late nights! When I’m not reading you can find me in the garden, or helping out at Beauty and Lace.
Thanks, Rach. This is lovely. I really enjoyed Liz’s At the End of the Day which I pre ordered. A lovely chat.
