Gillian Wells, author of Alone took some time out to have a chat with Beauty and Lace.

Get to know Gillian in this interview.

Tell us about yourself…

I am English and first came to Australia in the late eighties with my husband and youngest daughter. After that, we became hooked on spending the English winter in the Australian summer.

So, I have visited quite a few places here. I’m a country girl and love the outback and the wide-open spaces, the huge skies where you can BREATHE, and the people and animals. I have lived here permanently now for eight years.

Tell us a little about Alone and Consequences…

Both are set in the outback but though Consequences is a sequel they are different stories. However, many of the characters from Alone pop up again.

Basically, it is about living in those more isolated places and the first one especially is about a woman coping on her own through very difficult circumstances. Consequences has moved on five years and the challenges are different but still hard to overcome

Consequences has been nominated for the 2022 Miles Franklin Literary Award, what can you tell us about this experience?

When Alone was nominated last year I was thrilled and to get a second is utterly amazing. I also feel very humbled.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Alone was inspired by a lady I spoke to when on a trip to Longreach. She and her husband had moved from an isolated property to one in the outskirts of Chinchilla they were finding it hard to adjust. To me, there was unfinished business in Alone, so Consequences was then written.

What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

I have beautiful views of paddocks and mountains I can sit and look at. Also, my dog at my feet.

How do you celebrate when you finish your book?

I always feel a bit sad; I miss the friends my characters have become.

How do you use social media as an author?

I only use Facebook though I am on LinkedIn. I have my own page and post as much as I can without being boring [I hope].

Who is your favourite author?

I don’t really have a favourite, I like a wide range of different genres so depending on what I am reading, it changes. The authors I do like would fill this page.

What are you currently reading?

I was lent this book by Agatha Christie. Not really my cup of tea these days but it’s her journal when she went on archaeological digs with her husband and it’s quite a revelation!!

Where can our readers follow you?

My Facebook page is I think the best. Gillianwells author. All one word. My website address is the same only has .com on the end.

What is next for Gillian Wells?

Just started a new manuscript. Also, I am about to head off to the outback with Consequences soon, as after I presented them with Alone they invited me back.
