I set myself a challenge to get Emblaze read and reviewed in time for its official release date on October 11th, and then I snuck another book in before it, but still stuck to my resolve. It was looking like an extremely unlikely outcome when I got home from work with around 300 pages left to read .
Having no internet tonight has been a well disguised blessing because here I am, 300 pages later (and very tired), having met my challenge and finished the novel. My very first thought on closing the book was ‘oh no, how on earth am I going to find the patience to wait 12 whole months for the next book’ which is Endless and slated for release in October 2012.
Wow! I don’t know if it’s the late hour, my brain starting to slow down or just not having the words but that’s the best I can do right now. Emblaze takes the next step in many of the storylines, delving deeper into the emotional forces driving the lead characters and throwing a couple of pretty decent curve balls our way. I am generally pretty good at gauging the direction things are going to go but there were definitely a few totally unexpected surprises contained in this read.
The bittersweet cliffhanger ending, is probably not what I should be talking about this close to the beginning of the review but never mind, almost had me in tears. It was simple, elegant and heartbreakingly melancholy – I managed to catch a tear just before it fell, completely taking me by surprise.
Emblaze sees the Grigori trying to work out how to make Phoenix hand over what’s theirs and it seems that the high level of distrust from each side of this age old power struggle is going to make a trade near on impossible. Phoenix has what the Grigori want and there is unrest brewing within their ranks over what is an acceptable price to pay to stop Phoenix in his tracks – sometimes the greatest good comes with the greatest sacrifice but is it a price the Grigori are willing to pay? You’ll have to pick up a copy and have a read because that’s information you certainly won’t be getting from me.
The course of true love never runs smooth and as is proven time and time again in our world as well as in Violet’s, sometimes love is the strongest weapon with a razor sharp blade that cuts deep into the soul. Emblaze explores more of this course for Violet and those surrounding her, leading to some quite interesting revelations.
Triangles play an increasingly important role in the integral storyline, and there are more important triangles than the ever present one encompassing Lincoln, Violet and Phoenix. That will be an interesting puzzle to watch unravel, one that will set your blood to simmering and the final act is sure to be unmissable.
The Violet Eden Chapters are engrossing, thought provoking and seriously beginning to challenge my ability to avoid belief. The names, the angels and the history all combine to make this a plausible story. A series I am thrilled to have been exposed to and champing at the bit to get to the next volume.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years, I have broadened my horizons considerably. In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews. Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS!
