Escape Publishing have brought together eight talented Aussie authors for a collaborative series of short stories set in the small Queensland town of Milpinyani Springs.
Skye is the needy, nerdy girl who is madly in love with her best friend and has been since he stuck up for her against the bullies in school. He was the only one who never bullied her, who was always there for her and who knows her as well as she knows him. She grew up in Milpinyani Springs but left town to study veterinary science.
I couldn’t help but identify Skye with Amy Farrah Fowler from the Big Bang Theory, I read it in her voice and I couldn’t seem to break out of that. Skye is a bundle of nerves and repressed sexuality, she is still a virgin and she is desperately in love with her best friend.
I found the most amusement in Skye’s story; I think because she is the most wrapped up in her head and the inappropriateness of her feelings for best friend Bret. She’s inexperienced but she’s very intellectual about the process. The whole story was reminiscent of Amy Farrah Fowler to me, very much repressed desire just fidgeting to get out.
Much of the story, and my amusement, plays out in Skye’s head; her imaginings and her self-talk. She has been hiding this attraction for as long as she can remember, too scared to jeopardise what I gather is her only true close friendship. Only to discover that Bret shared her feelings, but he may have been acting a little more from nobility than fear.
The story is steamy but sweet, though these are more like the teenaged fumblings of first times and we don’t actually see the two joined in traditional intercourse it was definitely the heartwarming stirrings of early relationships.
I have found with this entire series that the focus has been on being safe. The lack of a condom is what say Skye and Bret save their joining for another time and in all of the other stories it’s been a prominent element of the buildup.

My blurb went missing… so now I have to bring you a new one. One that is a little broader too.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years I have broadened my horizons considerably.
I inhale music, hair metal that satisfies my inner bogan is where my musical passion lies, but again I’ve been exposed to lots of different music I wouldn’t normally listen to and have broadened those horizons also.
In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews.
Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS! Reading, writing, speaking, listening – if it’s got words I’m there!
