The Neighbour is the third novel by Fiona Cummins and it sounds like a suspenseful read that would be perfect to curl up with on these dark and stormy nights.

Publisher’s Website Overview:

FOR SALE: A lovely family home with good-sized garden and treehouse occupying a plot close to woodland. Quiet, leafy road, good schools, close to the sea and commutable to London. Perfect for kids, fitness enthusiasts, dog walkers . . .

And, it seems, the perfect hunting ground for a serial killer.

On a hot July day, Garrick and Olivia Lockwood and their two children move into 25 The Avenue looking for a fresh start. They arrive in the midst of a media frenzy: they’d heard about the local murders in the press, but Garrick was certain the killer would be caught and it would all be over in no time. Besides, they’d got the house at a steal and he was convinced he could flip it for a fortune.

The neighbours seemed to be the very picture of community spirit. But everyone has secrets, and the residents in The Avenue are no exception.

After six months on the case with no real leads, the most recent murder has turned DC Wildeve Stanton’s life upside down, and now she has her own motive for hunting down the killer – quickly.

The Neighbour is published by Pan Macmillan and is available now where all good books are sold.

  1. This is the first book I have read by Fiona Cummins and I absolutely loved it.
It is a dark, creepy, twisted, high intensity, can’t wait to turn the page novel that will have you sitting upright in bed or on the edge of your seat!

“Nobody comes to The Avenue without death seeping through the gaps in their walls” is a line you will be sure to remember.

The Lockwood family move to The Avenue on the coast of Essex. Garrick and Olivia bought a house for a bargain and thought they would flip and sell it for a huge profit. Before they move in a fifth body is found in nearby Woods with a serial killer named “The Doll Maker” on the loose. The police are struggling for leads and the case has become very close and personal for Detective Wildeve Stanton, she will do anything possible to solve the murders.

All residents in the neighbourhood seem to have secrets and all seem guilty. You will be suspicious of all of them; there will be some characters you will love and some that give you the creeps, you will be thinking one of them is the killer as you discover their secrets.

I highly recommend this book with its powerful frightening, spine-chilling, alarming, fearsome, nerve-racking storyline. I will definitely be buying Fiona’s other books and cannot wait for her next.

Thank you Beauty and Lace and Pan Macmillan for the dark crime thriller that I fell in love with!

  2. This book will have you turning the pages into the wee hours. Just as you think you have it worked out think again!!!!!!!
Thank you Fiona Cummins and Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read this book.

  3. Fiona Cummins new thriller ‘The Neighbour’ was a disturbingly addictive read that kept me guessing right until the final few pages.

The unique addition of insights and memories from the serial killers mind was gripping and written in such a way that it didn’t reveal the killers identity. I really connected with most of the characters and found it so nerve wracking to follow their journeys to finding the killer amongst them.

This book really makes you wonder how well you know those living close to you. Almost unputdownable!

Thanks to Pan Macmillan and Beauty and Lace book club for the opportunity to review this title.

  4. What a fantastic read! The Neighbour is a dark thriller which was very hard to put down!

The Lockwood’s purchase a house in a quiet neighbourhood at a cheap price – the catch is that there is a serial killer loose among them and they have just killed their 5th victim.!

Detective Sargent Wildeve Stanton is on the case but this last victim has rocked her world.! She is more determined than ever to find the killer.

Everyone in the neighbourhood has a secret – anyone of them could be the murderer! This book kept me guessing about the identity of the murderer right to the end.

I found it very well written and easy to read. I highly recommend it!

Thank you Pan Macmillan and Beauty and Lace for allowing me the chance to read this book.

  5. An interesting read by Fiona Cummings. This novel had me in two minds at first I wasn’t liking it but as I turned each page it became more and more likable. Trying to guess the identity of the killer is what keeps you reading on and on. Unexpected ending. I would totally recommend this book

  6. A very exciting novel full of unravelling secrets and suspenseful moments which keep the reader interested throughout the whole storyline. Just when we think all is resolved and we know all the answers one last twist is added to make the spine tingle. I will definitely pass this book on to my “neighbours” (lets hope their secrets are of little consequence to others in our street).

  7. A real page turner. The Neighbour by Fiona Cummins had me hooked. With short paragraphs jumping from character to character, the reader pieces together the story of The Avenue and the lives of those touched by the horrible murders that have occurred. Each chapter gets you a little closer to working out the killer though certainly provides many of possible endings and leaves you guessing until the very end.
Highly recommend for an easy but intense read.

  8. A great tale that kept me guessing! Just when you think you have solved the mystery, the story takes another turn and you find you were way off track!
I really enjoyed the interweaving links between characters in this book, there were many you didn’t see coming and some were in such a way that they truly surprised you.
The story of the Lockwoods moving into the Avenue was interesting enough with their backgrounds, thoughts, etc, and when you throw the rest into the mix (sorry, can’t say much without spoilers!) The Neighbour makes for a great read where it is hard to put the book down until the final page.
    Congratulations Fiona Cummins!

  9. So i knew who did it…..then i didn’t then i did again or did I?

Read this on a weekend away with hubby, he kept talking and i kept saying

Well crafted and a very enjoyable read

Characters were believable and it had just the right amount of “creepy”

Would definitely recommend and in fact my mum (75) is half way through and loves it as well

  10. Fair to say that after reading this book I will be looking at my neighbours a little bit more closely!

This was my first Fiona Cummins book. From the opening chapter I was hooked and completely enthralled in the lives of the characters that live on The Avenue.

This book follows many lives of the residents living on The Avenue. But amongst these residents there is a serial killer on the loose who has been nicknamed ‘The Dollmaker’ because of the way they display their victims, dressing them up and replacing their eyes with those of a dolls!

I really enjoyed the way Fiona describes all of the characters and takes you into their lives for you to try and solve the crime for yourself. You become very involved in the lives of these characters, especially that of DC Wildeve Stanton as you really feel for her as she tries to hunt down the killer.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading other book written by Fiona Cummins.
