The Café by the Bridge is the second book in the Chalk Hill series, where we are taken back to the scene of Water Under the Bridge; back to where Ella and Jake fell in love.

Abe Honeychurch is our leading man, still broody and miserable after being scammed hard and losing it all. He’s back in Chalk Hill to work on paying his debts and open a new eatery in his home town; in the inherited house that caused so much angst in Water Under the Bridge.

He isn’t interested in justice, he just wants to move on and forget all about the whole situation.

Unfortunately for Abe, Taylor Woods has come to town looking for Abe because her brother was left broke and broken-hearted by the same woman and Taylor is determined to get justice for him.

The Café By The Bridge promises a journey filled with angst, laughter, small town community and chemistry.

I look forward to picking this up sometime real soon. In the meantime, thanks to Harlequin Mira 10 of our Beauty and Lace Club members will be reading The Café By The Bridge and you can read what they thought in the comments below. Please be aware there may be spoilers.

  1. This rural romance novel written by Australian author, Lily Malone is the second of three books set in the fictional West Australian town of Chalk Hill.

I haven’t read the first novel in the series, so it was great that this novel was stand alone & it didn’t matter that I hadn’t. In saying this, & after reading this one I would like to go back & read the first novel too.

It was an easy enjoyable read. The character were easy to get to understand & follow their journeys.

It touched on Abe needing to get some help from a Psychologist which isn’t common for men to acknowledge they could benefit from talking to someone.

A few twists & curls thrown in for good measure.

    Loved this one

  2. Cafe by the bridge by Lily Malone is the second book in the Chalk Hill series, I haven’t read the first book Water Under the Bridge but didnt feel like I needed to read it first.
Taylor Woods (child psychologist and miss fixer) is on a mission to help her brother Will. Scammed by a lying cheating scammer girlfriend, Taylor is out to get justice for her little brother, enter Abel Honeychurch, he was also scammed by the same women, Amanda. Returned home to Chalk Hill to lick his wounds, Abe has opened the Chalk n Cheese cafe in his Nannas old house.
Taylor takes a few days off work to track Abe down and convince him to help her and Will. Taylor is meet with a grumpy irritable man who doesn’t want to be in Chalk Hill. Upon broaching the subject of Amanda Abe loses it and tells Taylor to get out of his cafe.
Taylor is on her way back to Perth when Abe’s sister in law to be Ella stops her and invites her around for coffee. The two hit it off immediately and Taylor ends up staying the weekend, Abe is able to apologise for his bad behaviour and they strike a friendship that has the potential to turn into much more.
As they get to know each other better Taylor mission to help Will gets pushed to the back of her mind as she helps Abe with his own personal demons and there attraction blossoms.
Upon going back to Perth Will’s issues are again thrown to the forefront of Taylor’s mind but Abe also has more personal issues to deal with.
Taylor comes to realise she may not be able to help everyone.
I quite enjoyed this book, it was an easygoing read with a bit of suspense thrown in, I wasn’t sure how the story with Amanda was going to end. I’m also intrigued for the book I’m sure will be coming up about Brix and Jaydah with the little snippets that were thrown in about them!
Huge thanks to Beauty and Lace and Harper Collins for the chance to review yet another great book!

  3. Review of “The Café by the Bridge”. By Lily Malone.

An easy, enjoyable read with the perfect amount of twists and depth.

The rural, peaceful setting in which the majority of the story takes place is the perfect setting to focus on getting to know the characters and forming an attachment to the story line, leaving you wanting to know more about them.

Throughout the story, just as you are settling into the smooth plot, a twist is introduced – and each time I never saw it coming! A subtle but fascinating twist that keeps you intrigued and looking forward to the next part to find out what happens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse range of character relationships. It wasn’t the run of the mill, young adult meets young adult and find love with a perfect happy ending. There was a refreshing authenticity in their relationships, that include step-parenting, age differences, 2nd marriages, etc, and the ups and downs that is found in every day real life relationships.

The delicate topics covered in the book were handled with a gentle but firm approach. The reality of mental health issues, terminal illness and traumatic experiences were handled with care and discussed in a way that allows you to feel and understand what the character is going through without turning the book into a difficult and tense read.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for those who like a good storyline, scattered with depth but easy to read allowing you to happily escape into the world of Chalk Hill and the characters that are connected to it.

  4. It took me a second try after only reading a few pages to really get into the characters and story, but once I did I found myself looking forward to my bedtime and reading more before I went to sleep.

I am not really a person who reads country romances but it was a lovely story and the characters were funny, believable and entertaining.

I am glad I.gave it a second chance. Thanks Beautyandlace for another great read.
